Today’s Urban Belle Review is for the kids.  Imani And Friends: I Love My Hair is a book about the daily struggles of a little girl (Imani) who’s trying to find her inner beauty so she can let it shine on the outside.

Summary

Imani is an extraordinary 10 year old little girl who’s battling with being teased daily about wearing her hair in its natural state, by some of her classmates.  Although she had big plans to get her hair relaxed (or permed) when she turned 10, her mom quickly shuts that idea down.  Because of her mother’s decision to change her lifestyle, Imani is faced with having to deal with her natural hair as-is, minus any chemicals or extensions. This proves to be really hard for her to do.  It isn’t until Imani has a conversation after school one day, with someone whom she looks up to, that she begins to realize just how great her hair is.  She starts to see that her hair is a blessing.  Now she knows that natural hair can be worn in lots of versatile ways and can even be fun learning how to style it.

Imani’s new excitement leads her to share her new hairstyle experience with her mom and her new sense of pride helps her to build confidence in herself.  Now going to school isn’t so bad.  Imani is no longer afraid to stand up for herself in the face of adversity.

My Thoughts

I think this is a great book for children.  It’s especially perfect for any young kids who may struggle with fitting in, their appearance or who may simply have feelings of inadequacy.  The length of this story is just enough to keep a young child interested. It’s also written in language that kids can understand and the illustrations are SUPER adorable! Just look at that cute face.

Grade

For such a great book and one I would absolutely share with my daughter, I give this an A!

You can purchase this on Amazon in either a digital copy or paperback.  If you have Kindle Unlimited, it won’t cost you a dime. But I would highly recommend that you spring for the paperback copy for your little one or a special little one in your life because they will not want to put this down and when they outgrow it, you can pass it on to another little “Imani”.
